Dozens of ready-to-eat food items have been recalled across four U.S. states after being linked to a Listeria outbreak that has sent 10 people to the hospital, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
On Saturday, the company Fresh & Ready Foods announced a voluntary recall of 86 sandwiches, snack packs, and pasta meals that may be contaminated with Listeria, a harmful bacteria that can cause serious illness, especially in people with weakened immune systems.
What Products Were Recalled?
The recalled items include ready-to-eat foods that don’t require cooking before eating. These products were sold under three different brand names:
- Fresh & Ready Foods
- City Point Market Fresh Food to Go
- Fresh Take Crave Away
The affected items have use-by dates from April 22, 2025, to May 19, 2025. A full list of recalled products is available on the FDA’s website.
Where Were These Products Sold?
The recalled foods were sold in:
- Arizona
- California
- Nevada
- Washington
These items were available in places like hospitals, hotels, airports, airlines, and convenience stores. So far, all reported illnesses have occurred in California and Nevada.
What Is Listeria and Why Is It Dangerous?
Listeria is a type of bacteria that can cause a serious foodborne illness called listeriosis. People usually get sick after eating contaminated food. The symptoms can include:
- Fever
- Muscle aches
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Stiff neck
- Loss of balance or confusion
In some cases, the illness can be life-threatening, especially for:
- Pregnant people
- Older adults (65+)
- People with weakened immune systems
If you have eaten any of the recalled foods and feel sick, contact a doctor right away.
How the Outbreak Was Tracked
The Listeria outbreak began in late 2023. Between December 2023 and September 2024, ten people were hospitalized. At the time, the FDA couldn’t find the exact source.
In April 2025, routine testing found Listeria bacteria inside the Fresh & Ready Foods facility. Lab tests confirmed it was the same strain that caused the outbreak. Although no one has been directly linked to the specific recalled foods, the company issued the recall as a precaution.
What Should You Do Now?
If you have any of the recalled foods:
- Do not eat them.
- Throw them away immediately.
- Clean any shelves, containers, or surfaces the food may have touched.
- Watch for symptoms of Listeria for several weeks.
Bottom Line
A Listeria outbreak has led to the recall of 86 ready-to-eat foods across four states. While the chance of getting sick is low, the risk of serious illness is real. Check your refrigerator and stay informed. If you have questions or symptoms, talk to your doctor right away.
