A new study suggests that probiotics—“good” bacteria often found in foods like yogurt—could help ease the side effects of chemotherapy for breast cancer patients.
Chemotherapy is a common and powerful treatment for breast cancer. While it works well to fight cancer, it can also cause tough side effects like nausea, tiredness, and a weak immune system. These side effects can make it harder for patients to continue their treatment and live comfortably during therapy.
Researchers publishing in the journal Pharmacia looked at how probiotics with seven different strains affected women receiving chemotherapy for breast cancer. They measured patients’ physical strength, energy levels, and blood health before and after taking the probiotics.
The results showed promise. Patients who took the probiotics had less fatigue and nausea, two of the most common chemotherapy side effects. They also showed improvements in blood test results and daily functioning. This means they were more able to take care of themselves without needing extra help.
The researchers say these early results are encouraging. However, they note that more research with larger groups of patients is needed before doctors can begin recommending probiotics as part of standard cancer care.
Still, for now, probiotics may offer a new way to help breast cancer patients feel a little better during a very difficult time.
