New COVID Variant “Nimbus” May Cause Sharp Sore Throats, But Vaccines Still Work

by Shreeya

A new COVID-19 variant called NB.1.8.1, or “Nimbus,” has been linked to a rise in cases in parts of the world and is nicknamed “razor blade throat” COVID because it may cause painful, sharp sore throats. Doctors in the United Kingdom, India, and other countries have reported this symptom.

Where Is Nimbus Spreading?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Nimbus cases have increased mainly in the eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia, and western Pacific regions. By mid-May, this variant made up about 11% of COVID samples sequenced worldwide. In the United States, airport screenings found travelers carrying Nimbus arriving in states like California, Washington, Virginia, and New York.
