According to health expert Harold Neighbors, professor emeritus at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, men face intense societal pressure to appear “tough.” This mindset discourages them from showing vulnerability or asking for help—including from medical professionals.

“It’s not just about physical health,” says Neighbors. “Men are less likely to seek care for mental health too, even though anxiety, depression, and stress are widespread.”

Community Action: Free Health Screenings and Support

Some organizations are stepping up to break down these barriers. In Detroit, Demetrius Scott is helping lead the charge as a coordinator for the African-American Male Wellness Agency.

The nonprofit offers free health screenings and fitness programs to encourage healthier lifestyles among Black men—a group that faces even steeper health disparities.

“Access is one thing,” says Scott. “But trust and awareness are just as important. We’re here to change that narrative.”
