Health Experts Emphasize Prevention in Reimagining Heart Care

by Shreeya

During a recent TIME100 Health panel in New York, leaders in cardiovascular health underscored a pivotal shift towards preventive strategies to combat the rising tide of heart disease in the United States. Citing alarming projections from the American Heart Association (AHA), which anticipate that more than 184 million Americans—about 61% of adults—could be affected by cardiovascular disease by 2050, the discussion centered on proactive measures to mitigate these risks.

Nancy Brown, CEO of the AHA, emphasized the staggering economic and health burdens associated with heart disease, highlighting disparities in healthcare access and social determinants of health as critical factors. “I think that this country focuses a lot on treating conditions,” Brown noted, “But we’re not focusing enough on prevention and helping people earlier in their lives understand the power of things that make a difference.”

Kiran Musunuru, a professor at the Perelman School of Medicine, outlined the multifaceted nature of cardiovascular disease, attributing its development to both genetic predispositions and environmental factors such as lifestyle choices. He stressed the potential for early intervention to delay the onset of heart disease-related complications significantly. “Instead of suffering a bad heart attack at age 60, maybe dying from it,” Musunuru suggested, “it happens at age 100 and you enjoy 40 years of life you might not have otherwise had.”

Andres Acosta, from Mayo Clinic, discussed emerging treatments like Wegovy and Zepbound, which have shown promise in reducing cardiovascular risk factors, particularly among individuals struggling with obesity—a significant contributor to heart disease. Acosta hailed recent findings indicating a 20% risk reduction in heart attack, stroke, or cardiovascular death among Wegovy users, marking a transformative milestone in obesity management and cardiovascular health.

The panelists also advocated for expanded genetic testing to identify predispositions to heart disease early on, empowering individuals to adopt proactive health measures based on personalized genetic insights. This approach, Musunuru argued, could revolutionize preventive healthcare by providing tailored interventions that align with individuals’ genetic profiles throughout their lives.

As the discussion concluded, the consensus among health experts pointed towards a paradigm shift in healthcare—from reactive treatments to proactive prevention strategies—as pivotal in reshaping the future landscape of heart care in the United States.
