2 Hours of Screen Time: Anxiety Risk for Teens

by Shreeya

A recent study published in Computers in Human Behavior has shed light on the significant impact of screen time on teenage mental health.

The research reveals that exceeding two hours of screen time on weekdays can double the odds of clinically elevated anxiety and quadruple the likelihood of emotional and behavioral difficulties among teens.

The study observed 580 adolescents aged 12 to 17, finding that passive scrolling on screens, compared to other screen activities, had a particularly negative impact.

Emma Duerden, Canada Research Chair in Neuroscience and Learning Disorders and an associate professor at Western University, explained the context of the research: “Our group conducted several studies during the pandemic, demonstrating a rapid rise in screen time among children. Even after restrictions ended, screen use remained high and was associated with increased anxiety and depression.”

Duerden highlighted that anxiety levels in teens are generally higher than in younger children, making it crucial to understand the relationship between screen use and mental health. The study found that 45% of the participants had clinically elevated anxiety levels, a significant increase from the pre-pandemic rate of 8-15%.

This alarming data underscores the importance of addressing mental health issues among teenagers. In Ontario alone, tens of thousands of children and adolescents are currently on waitlists for mental health services, according to Duerden. “With limited community support available, identifying targets for prevention and resilience is key,” she emphasized.

The findings are consistent with broader research on the topic. Pew Research has also indicated that both parents and teens view social media as a major factor contributing to poor mental health. As the evidence mounts, it is clear that reducing screen time could be a critical step in improving the mental well-being of today’s youth.
