The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a health alert for raw ground beef that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The affected product was distributed to Whole Foods Market stores across the country.
The beef in question is Organic Rancher Organic Ground Beef, 85% lean and 15% fat, sold in one-pound vacuum-packed packages.
The packages carry use-or-freeze-by dates of June 19 and June 20, 2025. The product was produced between May 22 and May 23, 2025, and bears the USDA inspection mark with EST. 4027.
E. coli O157:H7 is a dangerous bacteria that can cause severe illness. Symptoms include dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and stomach cramps that can last for several days.
Although a recall was not requested because the product is no longer available for purchase, consumers who bought this ground beef are advised to throw it away or return it to the store.
The USDA reminds everyone to cook all raw beef to an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit to kill harmful bacteria. For more information, consumers can refer to the USDA’s safe minimum internal temperature chart.
For questions about food safety or recalls, contact the USDA meat and poultry hotline at 888-674-6854 or visit the USDA website. The hotline is available from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays.
