by Shreeya

The August Egg Company has recalled approximately 1.7 million brown cage-free and certified organic eggs amid an ongoing multistate Salmonella outbreak, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The eggs were distributed from February 3 through May 15 to retailers across nine states: California, Nevada, Washington, Arizona, Nebraska, New Mexico, Illinois, Indiana, and Wyoming.

The recall covers eggs with sell-by dates ranging from March 4 to June 19, 2025, sold under various brand names including Clover, First Street, Nulaid, O Organics, Marketside, Raley’s, Simple Truth, Sun Harvest, and Sunnyside. These eggs were available at major retailers such as Walmart and Safeway.

To date, the outbreak has sickened 79 people across seven states—New Jersey, Kentucky, Nebraska, Nevada, Arizona, Washington, and California—with at least 21 hospitalizations reported but no deaths.

The CDC warns the true number of cases is likely higher, as many infected individuals recover without medical care and are not tested for Salmonella.

Salmonella is a bacterium that causes foodborne illness, with symptoms including diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps appearing 6 hours to 6 days after exposure. Vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of severe illness.

The CDC advises consumers who have the recalled eggs to discard them or return them to the place of purchase. Businesses are urged not to sell or serve the recalled eggs and to thoroughly sanitize any surfaces or items that may have contacted the eggs.

In response, August Egg Company has begun pasteurizing eggs at an egg-breaking facility to eliminate pathogens and is conducting a thorough internal review to prevent future outbreaks. The company has committed to implementing corrective actions to ensure food safety.

This recall follows a recent salmonella outbreak linked to cucumbers distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales, highlighting ongoing challenges in food safety monitoring.

The FDA and CDC continue to investigate the outbreak and will provide updates as new information becomes available.
