A recent study has revealed that the type of protein—whether animal-based or plant-based—does not impact muscle growth.
Researchers from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign found that protein distribution throughout the day and moderate protein intake also had no significant effect on muscle-building outcomes.
The study, published in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, involved 40 healthy adults who followed a nine-day diet and weight training program.
The participants were randomly assigned to a vegan or omnivorous diet, with protein intake either evenly distributed across meals or varying throughout the day.
Despite previous beliefs that animal protein was superior for muscle gain, the results showed no difference between the two groups.
Professor Nicholas Burd, who led the study, emphasized that as long as individuals consume sufficient high-quality protein, the source of the protein does not make a significant difference in building muscle.
This research challenges long-standing views on protein intake and muscle synthesis.
