The Global Virus Network (GVN), a group of top virus experts from over 80 centers worldwide, has issued a strong warning about the growing threat of the H5N1 bird flu outbreak in North America.
They call on governments to improve monitoring, strengthen farm safety, and prepare for possible spread between people.
Since 2022, H5N1 has spread across all 50 U.S. states and Canada, killing or forcing the culling of more than 168 million poultry. Nearly 1,000 dairy cow herds have been infected, and over 70 human cases have been reported, including the first confirmed death in the U.S.
While the virus has not yet spread from person to person, experts worry that genetic changes could make this possible.
GVN leaders stress the need for better testing of animals and farm workers, faster sharing of virus data, and stronger use of protective gear on farms. They also urge investment in rapid vaccine development and plans for quick clinical studies to fight new virus strains.
Experts warn that the virus’s spread among mammals like cows and pets raises the risk of new mutations. They emphasize that current surveillance is not enough to track the virus’s true reach or prevent outbreaks.
“The virus can infect animals and humans, and recent changes in its genes make close monitoring and quick action vital,” said Dr. Sten Vermund, GVN’s chief medical officer.
The GVN calls for global cooperation to improve detection, share research, and prepare health systems to stop a potential pandemic before it starts. Their message is clear: early vigilance and strong prevention are essential to protect public health from this dangerous virus.
