Experts Urge Regular Prostate Screenings Amid Rising Cancer Risks

by Shreeya

With former President Joe Biden’s recent prostate cancer diagnosis making headlines, medical professionals are emphasizing the critical importance of routine prostate screenings for men, especially as they age.

Dr. Adam Jones of Phoebe Putney highlights that men in the local region face a higher risk of developing prostate cancer, often at a younger age than average. He notes that many men tend to delay medical check-ups due to fear, discomfort, or reluctance to discuss health issues.

“Men often postpone screenings and avoid doctor visits, which can delay diagnosis,” Dr. Jones explained. “The only way to detect prostate cancer early is through regular screening.”

Early detection is key: prostate cancer identified in stages one or two has a 90 to 100% cure rate. However, once the cancer progresses to stages three or four and spreads to bones, blood, or lymph nodes, it becomes incurable and requires lifelong treatment, which can significantly impact quality of life.

Frank Wilson, an Albany resident and prostate cancer survivor, encourages men to overcome apprehension about screenings. He points out that modern prostate-specific antigen (PSA) tests are simple blood draws, eliminating the discomfort associated with previous rectal exams.

“Men have no excuse not to get checked now,” Wilson said. “It’s quick, easy, and can save your life.”

To support men’s health, Phoebe Putney will host its annual free Men’s Health Fair on Saturday, June 14, during Father’s Day weekend. The event offers free health screenings, including prostate exams.
