Many people focus on weight loss or gut health but overlook a simple factor: how they sit. Poor posture while sitting or standing can cause serious health issues, says Kristianne Egbert, a certified ergonomist.
Why Posture Matters
Sitting or standing incorrectly strains your body. It misaligns joints, tightens muscles, and slows blood flow, leading to fatigue and discomfort. Holding one position too long makes muscles tense and worsens circulation.
Move Often, Even at Your Desk
Egbert advises regular movement throughout the day. For computer work, try standing 20 minutes each hour, broken into two 10-minute sessions. Avoid standing still for more than 20 minutes at a time.
Common Sitting Mistakes
People often slouch forward, usually because their screen is too far or their chair doesn’t fit right. A chair that is too high or too deep can cause you to lean forward or sit awkwardly.
How to Sit Right
Sit upright with your back fully supported by the chair’s backrest.
Your thighs should rest comfortably on the seat, with 2-3 inches of space between the seat edge and the back of your knees.
Keep upper arms relaxed at your sides and forearms level with your keyboard.
Armrests should support your forearms without interfering with typing.
Keep feet flat on the floor or a footrest, with knees and ankles bent at about 90 degrees.
Your hips should be slightly open at 90 to 100 degrees.
Better Posture, Better Health
You don’t need to be perfectly straight like a royal, but small adjustments can reduce muscle strain and improve circulation. Investing in an adjustable chair can make a big difference for comfort and health.
