A recent survey of 1,500 women over 40 reveals the common moments when women recognize they’ve entered their 40s. Interestingly, 19% didn’t accept they were in their forties until at least two months into the decade. But many say they know for sure when they start sounding like their mother, get excited about new home appliances, or prefer relaxing baths over nights out.
Other signs include avoiding coffee after 4 p.m., explaining the huge popularity of the Spice Girls to younger people, realizing their favorite album is now 25 years old, and noticing their teenage celebrity crushes are “getting on a bit.”
This research was commissioned by Vitabiotics Wellwoman Perimenopause, a nutritional supplement aimed at supporting women during perimenopause—the transitional phase before menopause when the body undergoes hormonal changes. The study aims to raise awareness about perimenopause and the support available for women in their 40s.
More than half (51%) of women aware of perimenopause mistakenly think it only affects older women, while 81% don’t see themselves as “old.” Emma Bardwell, a perimenopause expert and author of The Perimenopause Solution, explains: “Life keeps teaching us new things, and entering your 40s can bring real wake-up calls. When I experienced perimenopause at 42, it was tough because I lacked support and information.”
She adds, “Many women don’t realize that perimenopause often starts in the forties due to changing hormone levels. Thankfully, awareness and education have improved, and it’s never too early to prioritize your health.”
Despite some denial about aging, 15% of women say their 40s are the best years so far. They appreciate caring less about others’ opinions, enjoying small pleasures, and having a better understanding of themselves.
The survey also found that 75% of women take their health more seriously after 40, often motivated by perimenopause symptoms. However, 80% wish they had known more about perimenopause earlier, as many describe it as emotionally draining (21%), physically exhausting (17%), and stressful (10%).
