Walking Groups Help Men Open Up and Heal

by Shreeya

A grassroots walking initiative offering men a safe space to talk about their mental health has grown into a nationwide movement — and now, a book.

Men Walking & Talking, founded in 2021 by Dan Reid in Telford, has expanded rapidly, now hosting 35 walking groups across 16 counties in the UK. The concept is simple but powerful: men gather weekly to walk, talk, and support one another without judgment or pressure.

Each group walk is led by a volunteer and requires no booking or registration. Participants simply meet at a designated location and walk together. The atmosphere is relaxed and inclusive — ideal for men who may struggle to express their emotions in conventional settings.

Stories of Transformation Now in Print

On Friday, the initiative will publish its first book — a compilation of personal stories from men who credit the group with changing their lives. These accounts reveal the deep impact of open conversations and peer support.

All proceeds from the book will go directly toward sustaining and growing the walking groups.

Creating a Culture of Openness

Founder Dan Reid explained the group’s ethos: “There are no requirements except to listen, be honest, and speak only if and when you feel ready. The lack of pressure makes it easier for men to open up — especially when they see others doing the same.”

This peer-led approach has resonated with many. Men from across the UK have shared how the regular walks have helped them break through isolation, form new friendships, and feel understood.

Reid emphasized how loneliness is often an invisible barrier for men:

“Many guys tell us, ‘I plan my whole week around the walk.’ They know they’ll be seen, heard, and supported — sometimes that’s all someone needs to get through the week.”

A Personal Journey of Change

Reid’s own transformation reflects the power of the initiative. Just a few years ago, he rarely spoke about mental health. Today, he helps coordinate nearly 40 groups nationwide and regularly encourages others to seek connection and support.

“This project has changed my life in a massive way,” he said. “Not just in how I talk about mental health, but in how I live, how I connect with others, and how I serve the community.”

Expert Insight: Why Walking and Talking Works

Mental health professionals increasingly highlight the benefits of movement combined with conversation. Walking outdoors reduces cortisol levels, promotes endorphin release, and naturally supports a more open state of mind. When paired with compassionate listening and peer support, the results can be transformative.

Practical tip for readers: If you’re struggling or know someone who is, consider joining a local support group or simply inviting a friend for a walk. The combination of physical activity and open dialogue can break emotional barriers and strengthen mental well-being.

Summary

Men Walking & Talking is more than a stroll — it’s a lifeline. As the initiative expands and its first book launches, it continues to inspire men across the UK to take the first step toward healing — one walk at a time.
