John Brenkus, the renowned host of ESPN’s “Sport Science,” has passed away after a prolonged struggle with depression, according to a statement from Brinx TV, the production company he founded.
Brenkus died on May 31. His family and friends have asked for privacy during this difficult time and urged anyone facing depression to seek help.
“John lost his fight with this terrible illness,” the statement said, emphasizing the importance of mental health awareness and support.
Brenkus gained fame through “Sport Science,” a groundbreaking show that used advanced technology to analyze athletic performance. The program earned six Emmy Awards for its innovative approach to exploring sports’ physical and scientific challenges.
In a 2023 interview with former NFL player Marcellus Wiley, Brenkus openly shared his personal battle with severe depression. He revealed that after selling “Sport Science” and relocating to Park City, Utah, he experienced a profound depressive episode.
“Mental health, suicide, it’s a real thing, and I counted myself out,” Brenkus reflected. “I consider it my greatest blessing and victory that I marched through the valley of darkness to get to where I am today.”
Brenkus was committed to spreading hope and encouraging those in need to reach out for help. “There is hope. There are hotlines, friends, family, and others. Talk about it,” he urged.
